JnU students’ sit-in at Kakrail enters second day

Students of Jagannath University (JnU) continued their sit-in protest for the second consecutive day on Thursday, occupying the busy Kakrail intersection in Dhaka to press home a three-point demand, reports UNB.
Chanting slogans and blocking the road, the demonstrators vowed not to vacate the streets until their demands are met.
Their key demands include housing allowance for 70 percent of the university's students starting from the upcoming fiscal year, allocation of a full budget for Jagannath University in the 2025–26 national budget, and the construction of a second campus to ease overcrowding at the current facilities.
To maintain law and order in the area, law enforcement personnel—including members of the army, police, and SWAT—were deployed around the protest site.
The movement began on Wednesday, when students, joined by teachers, marched toward the State Guesthouse Jamuna, the official residence of the chief adviser, in a symbolic long march to press for their demands.
Students have since vowed to continue their demonstrations, saying the current infrastructure and budget allocations fail to meet the needs of Jagannath University's growing student body.
Notably, on May 10, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) imposed Section 144 near the Jamuna area, restricting public gatherings and movement.
